Free Class! Embry-Riddle UAS Public Safety

Embry-Riddle Worldwide offers MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) to anyone with an Internet connection and a desire to learn about aviation. And they are free! Future MOOCs will be announced as scheduled. This two-week MOOC covers key concepts related to small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) as applied to the Public Safety (PS) sector (Law Enforcement, Fire, Search, and Rescue), including basic types, characteristics, applications, and current and future uses.

It is designed for users primarily with public safety interests, and beneficial to interests in commercial, private/recreational, and public and educational sUAS applications. Specific importance is placed on the safety of flight within the National Airspace System (NAS), including where to fly and where to find flight planning tools.

The MOOC also introduces the Federal Aviation Regulations that cover commercial operations of sUAS (known as FAR Part 107), providing participants with the knowledge and resources to pursue further training, should they wish to become PS, Commercial, or Recreational sUAS pilots. Students will also learn the importance of flight standardization.  We will also address challenges such as cybersecurity, privacy, and data protection.

The first of two live webinars will include a presentation from industry-leading FLIR Systems on PS sensor operations. The second live webinar will feature Assistant Professor Anthony Galante, also a Daytona Beach Police Officer and one of the development leads of the DBPD UAS Unit, who will discuss a broad array of topics for public safety force UAS integration.

Intended Audience: Anyone working in or interested in working in Public Safety (PS) should have an understanding of the sUAS, its integration into safeguarding public interests, applicable regulatory environments, systems, and includes introduction to enforcement principles and tactical applications.
